"It's still a horrible experience to do business with most companies," Nielsen says, "because, honestly, their computer systems remain so cumbersome and customer-hostile."

About

- Interactive Media Design, what is it?

Interactive Media Design is design that works for the client to communicate and interact with the user. It is design that studies usability models, to evaluate what works and what doesn't. Interactive media design is designing for people; it just happens to use the computer.

- Why is usability important and what is it?

The easiest thing for a web site user to do is leave. If they find an application hard to use or get lost easily they will just go somewhere else -- somewhere that is easy to use. The same holds true for CDs/DVDs or computer based training. A user may not leave, but they will not absorb the information you are trying to give them.

Usability is studying what works. It leaves users satisfied not frustrated. It makes them feel successful. It also makes them feel more confident in you. In the end, it says you are considering the user's needs.
